Hey neighbors! I am looking for some help for a family of 6 (kids are 7, 9, 10, and 12) who moved from Afghanistan to Albania and finally made it to America in July. What this family has experienced is too traumatic to properly put into words. I’m sharing here in hopes that I can build a community for them to be able to make it here in Loudoun. Unfortunately, the process to obtain their social security cards takes longer than the 3 months they were given to pay for their basic needs. They want to work but can’t until they receive all of their documentation. So I’m hoping to recruit some more community members to support them in the in between. If anyone would like to help, please let me know! Right now, there are primarily 5 of us helping the family & we could definitely use some more helpers. Thank you!

What does it look like to support them?

Giving rides to job interviews, the DMV, grocery store, & any other urgent transportation

Coordinating play dates for the kids to make friends

Providing clothing, food, or other basic household items

Donating to our fundraiser to provide the family with their basic needs: rent, food, etc

Last year, Loudoun County, Va: Adopt a Teacher was created. The idea is to help teachers with items they need for their classrooms. You can send them individual items or a gift card. Some local businesses have joined in & bought everything on a teacher's list! We call this the initiative. They receive a shout out when we get word about it! I would love to see more businesses taking part in this. The lists are sorted by cluster, making it easy to find teachers in your own community or even to consider a teacher in a community where parents may have fewer resources. How precious is this playroom?

I helped this amazing family unpack 5 rooms in their home: the kitchen, master bedroom, toddler’s room, basement, & finally the playroom! It took about 5 sessions to get everything done over the course of 2 weeks. Now they’re ready to host their housewarming this weekend!

15 days away! Say what?! It’s really happening! We did the thing! ✨

We’re almost two weeks away from our first retreat! Who’s ready?!

We thought it would be great to introduce who’s behind the planning to start. Then, throughout the next 2 weeks, we’ll be sharing our speakers, workshop leaders, vendors, & sponsors!

Reconnect and Restore is a passion project. Tori Truesdale was tired of feeling like there weren’t retreats specifically for women to recharge, reconnect, & rest in Loudoun. So she decided to make it happen. But with the help of 4 local women small business owners because we’re stronger together.

Meet the team for our first retreat: Kelly Pauline, Tori Truesdale, Bre Roeder, Kelly Turner Ryan, & Ieisha Rice. We are all local to Loudoun & are passionate about loving the women in our community. We have our own stories of burn out, isolation, & mental health struggles (you’ll hear about some of them at the retreat because we believe vulnerability is a strength that brings us together)!

This is a passion project because ALL proceeds are going directly to the EOY Foundation which provides mentorships, leadership skills, & other resources for kids in foster care.

So today’s bad news was supposed to be that the local strawberry farm got hit by a hailstorm over the weekend so we're cancelling our "Strawberries" event scheduled for Saturday. The good news was supposed to be that since we got strawberries from them last week, we'll still have plenty of fresh strawberry lemonade and milkshakes, just no berries available for sale by the quart. Smokin’ Saturday will still be a blast with everything else you know and love at the farm this weekend.

But now dozens of parents woke up this morning to a world without their babies in it. Another community is grieving. Teachers are frustrated. Children are scared. We are devasted and heartbroken and FURIOUS.

The good news, if you can call it that? We are not powerless. We cannot and will not give up on making change and fixing what is so clearly broken. Courageous folks who have channeled their grief and anguish from personal tragedy into leadership continue to show us the way.
